Causes of a Failed EGR Valve
The EGR valve may be damaged by carbon deposits which prevent it from opening and closing properly.
It is often the pinion and crown of the electric actuator gear train that wear out and break, or one of the two small bearings at the actuator output that seizes and breaks. The shaft can also seize in the commutator.
Symptoms of a faulty EGR valve
- Loss of power, “engine chokes”
- Anti-pollution light on
- Vehicle stalls or won't start
- Technical inspection refused due to excessive pollution
- Black smoke (in some cases)
